From preparation to play
See an example session
Follow Lyra through a turn, then see how a DM prepares the adventure. These are worked examples using Tavern’s released controls.
At the table
Lyra takes her turn
Open the player demo in another tab to follow along. Lyra is a level 5 cleric using the 2014 rules. Select Reset sample for the starting values below.
Open player demo (new tab)Roll the attack, then damage
In Actions, find Quarterstaff. Select the attack roll +6. After the DM tells you it hits, select the damage roll 1d6+3. The dice results appear in the roller history.
You decide whether the attack hits. Rolling damage does not subtract HP from a target.
Record the enemy’s response
After an enemy deals 5 damage to Lyra, enter 5 in Hit points and select Damage. Her HP changes from 31 to 26.
Use Heal to add an amount back. Each change affects this sample character.
Spend a resource on the next turn
On Lyra’s next turn, open Spells and select Cast Bless. Level 1 slots change from 4 available to 3, and concentration is marked. On a phone, open Slots & resources to see the count.
Bless adds a reminder in this demo; it does not add a d4 to other rolls. The demo does not move tokens or resolve a full encounter.
Keep the next lead
Open Journal and write “Ask Mira about the sealed letter.” Your note stays while you explore the demo. Refresh or Reset sample to start again.
Before the session
Prepare the missing satchel
In a campaign you own, use these editable starters to build a first scene. Campaign hosting requires an eligible DM plan; see current plans.
Write a private opening
Open Journal → My Notes. In Plan a first session, select Preview example, then Use this starter. Edit the opening scene, leads and choices, then select Save Privately.
A worried courier waits at the old bridge. Cart tracks lead toward an abandoned mill.
Previewing adds nothing. Saving here keeps the note private to its author. Use Party Journal separately for information the group should read.
Give the lead a person and a purpose
In People & places, use Meet your first character to prepare Mira Fen, then Save NPC. In Quests, use Give the party a first quest and save The missing satchel.
These NPC and quest starters save as DM-only. Review their visibility before sharing them with players. An unfinished draft is preserved instead of being replaced by a starter.
Bring the table together
When the group is ready, select Start session in the campaign. Members see the live-session indicator. Select End session when you finish, and add the next lead to your journal.
Starting a session marks it live; it does not send invitations or reveal private preparation.
